Rights Group to Sue Hazelton, PA for Immigration Law

According the a Reuters news article, ‘Rights Group sue Pennsylvania Town on Immigration Law‘, the city of Hazelton, Pennsylvania passed “one of the toughest immigration laws in the United States this week.” Of course the civil liberties pundits slapped the town with threats of a law suite saying that the town of Hazelton has “overstepped its authority.”

The crime: Hazelton passed a measure that will deny a business permit to anyone hiring illegal immigrants. Here is an excerpt from the Hazelton ordinance:

That illegal immigration leads to higher crime rates, contributes to overcrowded classrooms and failing schools, subjects our hospitals to fiscal hardship and legal residents to substandard quality of care, contributes to other burdens on public services, increasing their cost and diminishing their availability to lawful residents, and destroys our neighborhoods and diminishes our overall quality of life. Source: ORDINANCE 2006-10, ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION RELIEF ACT ORDINANCE

The ordinance imposes a $1,000 fine on any landlord who rents to illegal immigrants. and establishes English as the city’s official language .

You see folks, Hazelton has recognized that as illegal immigrants move into their area, the illegals are linked to higher crime rates, overcrowded classrooms, and impose a financial burden on hospitals and social service organizations. Although true, that type of logic is a no-no for the politically correct civil action liberals.

After all the brouhaha from the ACLU and rights groups regarding the ordinance, Mayor Lou Barletta issued an open letter posted on the city website:

I believe the United States of America is the greatest nation on Earth. People who are in this country have an incredible amount of opportunities and blessings. But some people have taken advantage of America’s openness and tolerance. Some come to this country and refuse to learn English, creating a language barrier for city employees. Others enter the country illegally and use government services by not paying taxes or by committing crime on our streets, further draining resources here in Hazelton.

Illegal immigration leads to higher crime rates, contributes to overcrowded classrooms and failing schools, subjects our hospitals to fiscal hardship and legal residents to substandard quality of care, and destroys our neighborhoods and diminishes our overall quality of life.

The City of Hazelton is empowered and mandated by the people of Hazelton to abate the nuisance of illegal immigration by aggressively prohibiting and punishing the acts, policies, people and businesses that aid and abet illegal aliens. That is why I proposed the Illegal Immigration Relief Act.

Part of this ordinance, if enacted, would punish companies that hire illegal immigrants by denying them permits, making it harder for them to renew permits and forcing their loss of city business.

Another part would hold landlords accountable. Because people moving into the city naturally require a place to sleep, our landlords are our first line of defense. Landlords who rent to illegal immigrants — that is, who rent to people without checking their documentation, may be fined $1,000.00 for every illegal immigrant staying on their properties.

The final part of this ordinance makes English the official language of Hazelton. All city documents will only be available in English. Those applying for a permit would have to speak English. While our emergency services will never be denied to anyone because of a language barrier, every other aspect of city business will be conducted only in English. Let me be clear, this ordinance is intended to make Hazelton one of the most difficult places in the U.S. for illegal immigrants.

This measure is not racist because it does not target one particular race. The Illegal Immigration Relief Act is intended to deter and punish any illegal immigration in the City of Hazelton. Requiring the use of English does not target any other language; it merely states that no matter what language you prefer to speak at home, English will be spoken when you conduct business with Hazelton officials.

Illegal Immigration is a drain on city resources. Every domestic incident, every traffic accident, every noise complaint, each time we send our police department, fire department or code enforcement officer to respond, it costs taxpayer dollars. If the City of Hazelton began publishing official documents or conducting business in a second language, how would we respond when someone asks us to use a third, or fourth language?

Recent crimes – the shooting on Chestnut Street, the discharge of firearms at the Pine Street Playground, and high profile drug busts – have involved illegal immigrants.

Sadly, some of those allegedly involved in those crimes were detained by other law enforcement officials over the years, but were somehow allowed to remain in this country. They eventually migrated into Hazelton, where they helped create a sense of fear in the good, hardworking residents who are here legally.

This ordinance does not roll back the welcome mat to those who are legally in the United States. This country was built on the backs of legal immigrants. My own great grandparents came to this country seeking a better life. Rather, this ordinance seeks to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into Hazelton. They are not welcome here!

To the residents of Hazelton, I say thank you for your continued support. Hazelton is moving forward and becoming an even better place to live. To our recently arrived legal immigrants, I say welcome. I personally wish you all the best. With hard work and determination, the United States and Hazelton can be a place where your dreams come true. And to illegal immigrants and those who would hire or abet them in any way, I say your time is up. You are no longer welcome.

If you support this measure, please click this link to email us your support . You can also show your support by attending the City Council meeting on Thursday, June 15th @ 7:00 P.M. where this ordinance will be presented to Council for approval. Thank you and God Bless America.

During the Hazleton City Council meeting on July 13th when they debated the Illegal Immigrantion Relief Act, Anna Arias stood in front of City Council to oppose the ordinance.

Ms. Arias was asked by the Council to give a general idea where she lived and she refused. Instead she offered that she is a “commissioner appointed by three governors…”

Council President Yanuzzi asked Ms. Arias: “Then you are here representing the governor?”

Ms. Arias replied: “If you want to say it’s so, then I will be representing the governor, but I – I am representing the community whether you like to accept it or not.”

She called the ordinance “discriminatory, bigoted and racist” and continued to say “If you pass this, you will go down in history as the council that made Hazleton the first Nazi city in the country.” She has stated in the past “Undocumented immigrants are not criminals.”

Since Thursday, she has issued a statement indicating she was not speaking on behalf of Governor Rendell and charged the ordinance “attempts to split the Latino community of Hazleton into the Documented (presumed to be the law-abiding members of the Latino community) and the Undocumented (Criminal).”

While the ordinance applies equally to all, Anna Arias has placed her race and ethnicity above the laws of the United States in support of the “undocumented.” Furthermore, while claiming the law is “racist” she directed racist slurs at the Hazleton City Council by implying they are “Nazis” and thus the remaining residents of Hazleton as well.

Agapito Lopez also stood before City Council and stated that “immigrants needed instruction in our own language,” although English is the language of the United States. When asked how they would assimilate if they couldn’t understand or be understood, he said, “immigrants would not convert to Anglos.” Furthermore, he said defiantly, “We will acculturate, we will adapt to your rules, we will follow your laws, but we will never assimilate.”

Unlike generations of immigrants in the past who came to America for a better life, learned English, and assimilated into American culture – all in gratitude for being allowed the privilege to come to the United States – Agapito Lopez believes Latino immigrants are to be provided services in Spanish while maintaining their Latin culture since they will “never assimilate.”

The actions and statements of Anna Arias and Agapito Lopez clearly demonstrate the racist agenda on the part of the Latino community to the detriment of the entire Hazleton community. Their statements are hateful, divisive, and inflammatory. Additionally, each of these individuals is a member of Governor Rendell’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs.

Are these the type of people that should be advising the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on Latino affairs? Individuals who cannot or will not acknowledge that “undocumented immigrants” have violated federal immigration laws and are thus criminals? Individuals who demand services be provided to them in Spanish when 400 years of history have Americans speaking English? Individuals who defiantly state they will “never assimilate” which flies in the face of the American tradition of the Melting Pot? And individuals who hurl accusations of “racism” while then proceeding to make racist statements themselves?

Email, write, and call Governor Rendell’s office to insist that Anna Arias and Agapito Lopez be removed from his Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs.

I live in Ohio.I believe the town of Hazelton is doing the right thing. We need to put the pressure on the illegual people. I don’t like the attitude of people who do not want to be part of our American way.Go back to your country and take the A C L U wuith you Wilbur

Thank you Wilbur. Why the social engineers and leftists cannot understand national unity, our American flag, and all that we hold sacred is beyond me. When someone breaks the law, that person should be held accountable. The ACLU and their whacked out supports are trying to take America out of America. We had better wake up before our great country is ruined.

Kudos to Hazelton Pa!!!!! We live here in Alabama and we have many illegals in our town and surrounding towns…LOTS!!! They are mainstream in the factories around here, and I know this for a fact they come here and woo our young and not so young “white” females and make babies and then gone they are! When you go to get child support from that illegal…ah they need a social security number and of course they dont have one and if they do they are easily available to them…I guess in a ring of somekind, but the ssn are no good…they can be bought…and they use these ssn to obtain a job here in USA, …but child support?…Nope! They are able to get help from our counties and states, but child support? NOPE!

Hello,my name is Jim and my son is married to a woman from Honduras. She is a naturalized citizen and they live in California close to the Salinas Valley where much of this country’s food is grown. California is saturated with many hispanic workers and many are illegal aliens. California does have a program whereby they can come and work in the fields and then must return to Mexico. They are given many free services such as free medical care and food assistance that people who are born in this country cannot receive. My son’s wife works illegally cleaning houses making as much as 120.00 per day and pays absolutely no income taxes or Social Security and Medicare payments. My son condones this practice.

  12. James and Ruthann said

She is just 1 of many who do this same thing. I have not spoken to my son in almost 3 years because of his support of this felonious practice. Income tax evasion is illegal in this country. On holidays such as Memorial Day and the 4th of July this woman has the audacity to display the American flag. My son was even in the U.S. Navy and still condones this practice and perjures himself every year when he signs their income tax return stating that she has $0.00 income. I would like to see them both imprisoned or deported. There are so many more legal and illegal hispanics who do this very same thing and draw on municipal resources while people who are born here and are United States citizens are denied help!

  13. James and Ruthann said

I say round them up and drop them over Cuba without parachutes. We do not need people in this country who do not pay their way!!!!!! In addition to the illegals I say send Wal Mart packing to Mexico and take all illegal Mexicans with them. Wal Mart has cost this country too many good paying jobs and replaced them with mediocre wages and we are being raped by all these illegal workers and by Mr. Sam Walton and his unpatriotic company. We don’t need Wal Mart and we don’t need illegal aliens in this country!!!!!

  14. James and Ruthann said

Perhaps if Wal Mart had shipped jobs to Mexico by forcing manufacturers to produce goods in countries where labor is cheap and human beings are worthless, maybe we would not not so many of them in OUR COUNTRY!!!! This is the United Staes–not North Mexico!
