Capitol Re-Captured in Somalia!

Posted by Rosemary Welch on December 28, 2006

Ethiopian and Somalia Troops have moved into Mogadishu today, Thursday, Dec. 27, 2006, forcing the Islamic Court Union to flee. They have eliminated over 2000 al Qaida enemies, and now they will go to the southern part of Somalia to wipe out the whole lot of them.

In the mean time, there is celebration in the streets of Somalia. This only proves to the world that the reporting on these remote places cannot depend on the news being given them by the enemy. I only hope the AP would learn this lesson…again.

Here are the sources used: Somalia Gov’t Troops Enter Mogadishu, by The Guardian Unlimitted.
Al-Qaida’s “Islamic State of Iraq” Urges Immediate Support for Somali Islamists, CounterTerrorism Blog by Evan Kohlmann.
Islamic fighters quitting Somalia front, by Salad Duhul.

Update: Bill Roggio at The Fourth Rail has written a wonderful article with more insight into this situation. Don’t get too excited yet about the fall of the ICU. They may be going after another insurgency strategy. Hat-tip to Daveed Gartenstein-Ross who has also written a fine article.

If the link for the Guardian is no longer valid, try this one. If the link for Salad’s article is unavailable, try this one.
